Last week when readers signed up for my free weekly teleseminar, they submitted questions about creating information products. One of the questions many people asked was “What are the BEST information products to start with?”

I answered that question during last week’s teleseminar, but since many people who didn’t attend the teleseminar might be visiting this blogsite, I think it would be helpful to answer the question here, too.

Here goes.

Actually, the answer to that question is “You need to start with the kinds of information products that your readers want, need, and are able to afford.”

So, ask yourself this question, “Do I KNOW what kinds of information products my readers (meaning the people who visit my website and/or blog) want, need, and can afford?”

You probably have some idea as to what your readers want and need – but you MUST be sure about this. You may not know what they can afford, or what they are willing to spend for this information. So, even before you start creating information products, you need to find the answers to these questions.

One of the best ways to start finding the answers you need is by offering something FREE to the people who join your mailing list. A free e-book is a great way to find out if people actually WANT the kind of information you can provide. If you have a fair amount of daily traffic to your site, yet you aren’t adding to your mailing list every day, chances are, people are NOT after the type of information offered in your FREE e-book. However, be sure your website or blog is getting a fair amount of traffic each day or this isn’t a fair indication of interest in your e-book. To track your daily website and blog traffic put a site meter up. You can do this through www.sitemeter.com

Once people sign up for your mailing list and receive your free e-book, do they tend to STAY on your list because you are providing them with valuable FREE information on a regular basis? Again, if they don’t usually remain on your list, then they probably aren’t interested in the content you are sending them on a regular basis. And, if people don’t find your FREE information valuable enough to want to keep receiving it, they surely won’t want to PAY for similar information. You’ll need to rethink the kinds of information products you want to offer.

So what should you do right now if you want to start creating and selling your own information products?

Well, get your mailing list started.

Offer some FREE information product to entice people to join your list. After several weeks of decent traffic to your site, if this product doesn’t seem to be enough of an enticement, then go back to the drawing board and create something people WILL want to receive. Once you’ve done that, be sure the other information you send to the people on your mailing list on a regular basis – your newsletter, daily quote, tips, etc. – tends to KEEP people on your list.

Both of these actions (creating a valuable ebook or other FREE item and creating something else of value to give to people on your list on a regular basis) have been accomplished, you’ll have at least some of the answers about what your potential customers want and need.

Next, you’ll just need to figure out what they would be able and willing to PAY for similar, more expanded, information of this type.
