Miley Cyrus Book Launch

Whether your book is published by a traditional publisher or you choose to publish it yourself, promoting and selling your book will be basically up to you.

That’s precisely why more and more authors are choosing to self-publish their books. They figure if they will be doing most (or all) of the promotion for their books themselves anyway, they might as well have more control over the publishing process AND earn more money for each book they sell.

The odd thing about traditional publishers is that they spend most of their money promoting the books of high profile authors – like Dr. Phil or Madonna, the authors everyone already knows about – and mere pennies on the first-time authors no one has heard of. This means that many times a first-time author who manages to land a contract with a major publisher will find his or her book in direct competition with books by those high profile authors, and this new author’s sales will be so poor that agents and publishers will figure this author’s work is basically unsalable. That means, this author will find it extremely difficult to EVER obtain another contract with a traditional publisher for any subsequent books. Yikes! That’s pretty depressing. Isn’t it?

Before you write your book, decide just HOW, WHEN, and to WHOM you will promote it. Also, carefully consider whether self-publishing it outweighs the benefits of submitting the manuscript to traditional publishers.

You’ll probably need help making all these decisions. Work with a book sherpa or a book coach even BEFORE you write your book!
